DMAIC

DMAIC is a methodology that underpins the Six Sigma improvement approach

The table below shows the 5 phases of DMAIC. Often a sixth, Transfer (T), is included, and this is also shown in the table.

Phase Description
Define Define the project, its scope and the customer requirements.
Measure Identify and collect the data around the project. This includes process performance data and data that will enable the analysis of root causes of the business problem. This phase also includes testing the reliability of the data.
Analyse Analyse the data to explore possible causes, and identify which causes are having the biggest impact on the project objectives
Improve Select and test a solution, to prove that it will have the desired effect on the outcome. Implement the full scale solution. (If using the Transfer phase this rollout can be in a single part of the business)
Control Embed the improvements, implement ongoing monitoring processes, and handover the improved process to the operational owner. Document the project and findings for knowledge transfer
(Transfer) Identify other areas of the business that can benefit from the designs or knowledge gained and roll out transfers
